Eagle Ridge Farm would like to take a moment to congratulate Larry Ziebel on his acquisition of
Never’s Cash For Flash, otherwise know to all as “Thor”. Although Larry has had Thor now for about
6 years, this is the first opportunity we’ve had to acknowledge his merits with Thor on our new website.
Larry had stopped by our place inquiring about the handsome red gelding that we kept in our front pasture. He had an older gelding that was so used to the trails that he was a bit boring and wanted something younger that he could train. He also wanted a flashier horse and since his gelding was black and Thor was red with four white socks he thought he would be perfect. At the time, we needed a dead broke gelding that we could use for demos. Someone we could put anyone up on and be confident that no one was going to get hurt.
Larry was immediately taken by Thor’s presence, willingness to learn and overall personality. Thor isn’t unique to the Walking Horse breed because it’s common knowledge that they are known for their friendly natures, but in that respect Thor is an “enigma” and we initially had no intentions of selling him. As a foal he was intrepid and fearless. For example as a yearling, we had the Blazer pulled into the pasture working on fences. We had a tarp over the top of it to protect the paint from being scratched by the boards. After off-loading the boards and working with our backs turned, we spotted something blue out of the corner of our eye. Turning around, here was Thor. He had grabbed the tarp in his mouth, ripped it off the truck and was chasing the other two yearlings that were also in the pasture with us! What a HAM! On this same occasion, his fearlessness got the better of us. He was so curious of the chainsaw, that he wouldn’t leave us alone. We’re sure that passers-by thought they were witnessing a scene out of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” as we tried to chase him away! Speaking of HAM, he also was the “vain” one. Admiring his strikingly good looks in the reflection of any window or mirror he happened to come across.
So…when Thor was two, and after a lot of thought and acceptance that “we can’t keep ‘em all”, we decided not to sell Thor but trade him for Cisco, Larry’s older gelding.
Fresh from being green-broke, Larry had his 12 year old grand son riding Thor. He said his other walkers were too hot and Thor, having always loved kids was perfect. Larry is a member of the backcountry horseman and has had Thor everywhere. doing everything from packing kids to packing long bridge planks for the repair of bridges in the backcountry!
We love having Thor just around the corner and occasionally drive by and call him to the fence for a carrot….and yes, he still admires himself in the side window of the Blazer just as he did that day in the pasture. Some things never change!
UPDATE: Larry has recently built Thor a cart and has been teaching him to drive!
